Are there any side effects to TMS treatment?
Most commonly, you may experience a headache or mild discomfort where treatment was administered. Your body should adjust to the stimulation, and these side effects will diminish fairly quickly. Dr. Upshaw will review in detail the potential for minor side effects during your consultation.
How do I know if TMS is best depression treatment alternative for me?
TMS therapy is shown to work best for patients who have tried and failed at least one prescription depression medication or are tired of the side effects commonly associated with pills. Depression is thought to be a chemical imbalance, and TMS has the ability to treat your depression at the source, without the added chemicals or side effects of medication.
What makes TMS different?
TMS therapy treats your depression at the source, whereas medications are not advanced enough to treat one specific area of the body. Studies using MRIs on patients with depression showed the mood center of the patients' brains to be underactive in 100% of the images. TMS treatment has the ability to specifically stimulate the mood center of your brain, retraining your neurons to fire off on their own and assist your body in naturally correcting the chemical imbalance associated with depression. TMS is like muscle memory, but develops neurons in your brain.
How does the doctor find my mood center?
At your consultation, Dr. Upshaw will complete what is called a mapping of your brain. He will locate your motor threshold, the minimum amount of power necessary to make your thumb twitch, which varies from patient to patient. By measuring your motor threshold, Dr. Upshaw is able to personalize your treatment and determine the amount of energy required to stimulate your brain cells. Once the desired reflex is found in your hand, he will map his way to the area in front of your reflex band, where your mood center is located.
How long does it take?
Your initial consultation will require an hour to meet with Dr. Upshaw and perform your mapping. Following your consultation, treatment will be administered in 20 minute sessions, 5 days a week for 6-8 weeks.
Does it hurt?
You may experience mild discomfort in the area treatment is administered while adjusting to the stimulation, as your brain is not used to being stimulated from an outside source. However this does subside quickly, and Dr. Upshaw will start at a low dosage and slowly build up to the treatment recommendation. Each client is different in how much stimulation they can initally tolerate at a comfortable level. Dr. Upshaw will take his time to ensure your comfort along the way to the maximum stimulation goal of 120%.
Is it loud?
Everyone has a different noise tolerance. We offer ear plugs to all clients and have an Apple Home Pod in each treatment room, allowing clients to choose relaxing music of their choice.
Is it like an MRI?
TMS treatment does utilize an MRI strength magnet to administer pulses of magnet fields to the brain, but that is where the similarity ends. The treatment is quieter than an MRI and you are reclined in a comfortable, leather chair. Some patients are so realxed, they fall asleep during treatment.
What is TMS?
TMS stands for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. TMS is a treatment for depression that uses an MRI strength magnet to stimulate the part of your brain that controls your mood center, which has found to be hypoactive in patients who are depressed.

If you have a question about the cost of treatment, please reach out to a TMS specialist at NeuroSpa TMS.

That is a great question! TMS therapy was FDA approved 10 years ago, but insurance companies only started covering the treatment about 5 years ago.
