W. Nate Upshaw M.D.


Dr. W. Nate Upshaw graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Florida and earned his medical degree from The Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. After completing his residency training at the Morsani College of Medicine at University of South Florida, Dr. Upshaw worked in private practice and with the VA Healthcare System.

In 2009, Dr. Upshaw joined the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at the Morsani College of Medicine as an assistant professor. It was during his time on faculty, that Dr. Upshaw was trained in brain stimulation, with a focus on TMS, by The Medical University of South Carolina.

The brain stimulation lab (BSL) in the Department of Psychiatry at The Medical University of South Carolina has been at the forefront of using brain stimulation techniques to treat and study neuropsychiatric disorders since its inception and houses one of most extensive collections of brain stimulation technologies in the world, including 15 TMS machines.

Education holds a special place in Dr. Upshaw’s heart. He has been a faculty member and assistant professor at the Morsani College of Medicine since 2009, and has remained on as voluntary faculty where he continues to lecture and supervise psychiatry residents. Dr. Upshaw has won numerus teaching awards, and brings his passion for teaching to his work with patients.

With over 8 years of experience in brain stimulation and TMS, Dr. Upshaw has seen the technology improve, and body of evidence for the treatment grow. Dr. Upshaw is excited to partner with NeuroSpa to offer this exciting technology to the Tampa Bay community.
